Gary RPG Update 7

I'm happy to say that I'm 100% done chapter 2 of the game. The big boss has been programmed and fought, and the chapter ending scene has also been scripted and finished up. I'm going to be posting another little 'Let's Play' chunklet of the game's progress right now.

This game does have Tayce T. in it, and she does what we all know and love...cook things to make better things. Unfortunately the player can't just ask her to whip up any two items in hopes something good comes out of it, but fortunately she already prepares stuff she already knows is a decent recipe. What you lack in exploration you gain in practicality, though that's not to say the amount of recipes she can make will be terribly limited. Right now she can make Shroom Fry, Cake, Refreshing Tea, Apple Bread, Mushroom Omelettes and Pancakes. There will be more recipes available with each chapter the player completes.

We're heading to Forever Forest now, but first we'll take this item here! The grass and area is a bit deeper green, and the forest is even darker.

This is Forever Forest. Like the original Paper Mario 64 one, most of the areas have 4 paths to choose from and only one of them let you progress. Unlike the original Paper Mario 64 one, the areas are quite large and expansive...and look a bit more like a real forest.

Since we helped Goombario out before, Bobby Boo is here to be our guide through the woods. If he's there at the path in question, it's the right one. Otherwise you'll either get hopelessly lost in the woods or come back out of the entrance. Where Bobby Boo floats is very important right now.

From the second area on, we start to run into some trouble. New area, new enemies, ladies and gentlemen! These things are Fuzzies, which are googly wierd black things that made their debut in Super Mario World and show up in various games afterword. They have more health than anything we've fought before, so unfortunately they can't be one-shotted by a normal hammer or jump attack. They attack by rolling into you, hurting about 5 HP to Luigi and 8 to Gary...or by 'Lifeleecher' which drains 7 HP (always) and heals the attacker. Lame.

In many of the areas you can find items, a couple of star pieces and maybe a new badge, so look carefully. I found an Ice Flower. Yay.

Be careful where you walk, because sometimes Piranha Plants just come up out of the ground to attack you. We've already seen them in action so I won't reiterate.

Of course, I had to troll folks and put a couple of items specifically off the path Bobby Boo wants you to go. In this box is a Multi-Stomp badge, which is actually pretty useful because for 15 FP you can perform a jump attack on all the enemies at once. It's a good way to fight tons of enemies that aren't immune to jump attacks. This is going right on Luigi.

Fairly deep into the woods if you look, you'll find an apple tree. Every so often when you look around this area, you'll find an apple. You can eat it of course and it'll heal some of your HP, but the true power is (of course) baking it into Apple Bread, which does quite a bit more for the user.

Since Fuzzies aren't immune to jump in thie game, I tried out 'Multistomp' on them. It doesn't have perfect accuracy, but it does help a lot when you're fighting an enemy group like this. Oh look, Luigi's standing on another luigi in the shot. Heh.

That creepy critter there is a 'Pider', and they attack either by lobbing web wads at the target which hurt about 7-8 to Luigi and about 10 to Gary. They can also lob poison goo at a target, doing poisoning obviously. Poison isn't terribly bad a status problem in the game, leeching about 45% of your health away over 9 turns if you let it go that long. It does go away after battle, so at least you don't have to worry about any nasty noises made while walking.

With Gary and Luigi both at level 7 now, we've made it to the Boo's Mansion. Luigi and Gary have a cute little cinema scene where Luigi's petrified to go in there, but Gary seems overzealous to take a look inside the haunted estate.

The door just opened by itself and a haunting voice just welcomed us. That's not scary at all.

The Boo Mansion is a dungeon in itself, with enemies to fight, treasures to collect, and puzzles to figure out. Unfortunately the ghosts don't seem to be as friendly toward us as they were to Mario when he visited this place in Paper Mario 64. The Mansion's completely different in design from the original so game knowledge there won't help ya.

Sweet! Both the new baddies are here so I can talk about them in one shot. The Boos are probably recognizable by all but the dead yoshi fetus things are known as Eeries. They made their appearance in Super Mario World.

Boos can spook you which is basically their attack but it's magic instead of physical (so Luigi takes more damage and Gary takes less respectively.) Boos can also use Eulogy, which doesn't damage but causes 'Sadness.' Sadness basically makes the target suck, with their attack and defense cut in half. Boos are also immune to hammer since they can fly (sorry Gary), but the Eeries are not (possibly because they're too half asleep to notice someone attacking them? Eeries attack either by sleepwalking into them, or with the unpleasant attack 'Banegut' shown here. It does dark damage, and it hurts about 12-13 for Gary and about 16-17 to Luigi. Ouch.

Secret of the Haunted Books, anyone? (Super Mario 64.) The puzzle's essentially the same here, you pick the bookcases in the right order something good will happen. If you pick them in the wrong order, you get attacked by Eeries and have to start over. Since Eeries (in my opinion) are easier than Boos, you may want to use this as a level grinding opportunity.

Solving the book puzzle opens a secret passage to the basement where there's an item shop and an inn. The enemies in the forest and mansion aren't terribly dangerous, but they do wear you down. Having a place to stock and rest up is a pretty good thing. Be sure to do everything you need to when down there, because the secret passage closes itself up when you return to the main floor.

Not to toot my own horn, but I think I did a great job putting Boo Mansion together. There are plenty of cool things to explore and the atmosphere makes things spooky but not terrifying. Anyway, there's a Life Shroom and a Cake Mix here, as well as a star piece if you look hard enough.

We've got another puzzle we need to solve if we want the key upstairs (we do). It's one of those 'pick the door with something odd about the surroundings' puzzle. Picking the wrong door triggers a Boo fight. It's not terribly original, but it wouldn't be a Mario game if there wasn't a puzzle like this in it.

Just because it's unoriginal doesn't mean it's easy though...I messed up 3 times trying to get to this key room and I created the damned thing. I won't even tell ya what you need to do in order to get past the last puzzle. There was a mushroom, a fireflower and a Piercing Blow badge here.

The key opens the locked door in the main lobby and you can go upstairs from there. The second floor has a Power Rush badge and a star piece for you to find. I put the Power Rush badge on Gary, as he JUST mastered the Pretty Lucky badge. Gary fighting harder when he's low on HP is a welcome bonus for him. Anyway, now we've come to a ballroom...and Luigi is of course wussing out.

Like a fool, Gary decides to start playing the record player and a bunch of happy looking ghosts appear. Luigi is frightened of course, but Gary decides to ask them to dance with him as Luigi's too much of a stick in the mud to. They amazingly agree to it, and we see a cute goofy little cinema of Gary dancing to the 'Toad Waltz' song from Mario Party 1. Impressed with Gary's blithe attitude they give him the key he needs to get to the third floor. Looks like we're going to the top!

I think I'll stop it there. Tell me what ya think.

Gary RPG Update 6

Work's been picking up so I haven't had as much time to work on the game. As you all know the comic comes before this game, so the development has been a bit slower here. I do have a nice update for you here, and I'm pleased to say I finished Chapter 1 of the game.

This is Goomba Village, more or less the same as it was in Paper Mario 64. That being said, we're going to be seeing Goombario in the game, though he's just an NPC. Sorry Goombario fans.

Gary gets another chance to talk about the city he's from in the real world. Real New Yorkers are probably not as big on bragging about it as Gary is.

Goombario's got a friend from Forever Forest over, you say? My signifigance sense is tingling.

Goombaria comes up and tells Goompa that there's a problem in the garden, and what a problem it is! Looks like a gang of Piranha Plants have taken over the garden. Since Goombario only uses headbonk attacks, he's useless against enemies that can chomp him as he lands on them. Luigi and Gary both have hammers though so they're pretty eager to do some weeding.

Goombario never passes up the opportunity to learn something new, even if it flies in the face of common sense. Lucky none of those Piranha Plants chomped him.

This battle can be tricky if you don't have any items to help you. The piranha plants use a biting attack that does about 11 damage to Gary and about 8 to Luigi. They also have a fireball attack that hurts the same, except it's magic...so Gary has the better defense in this case. Rounding out their attacks is "Dizzy Seed" which they shoot at an opponent that damages and dizzies them.

They've got a nice fire weakness, so exploit it with a couple of fireflowers. You can find a couple on the road here and are really useful here if you didn't use them earlier. The plants didn't even last one round.

The experience for killing them's awesome, but the coins are lackluster. I guess sentient carnivorous plants don't carry a lot of cash on them.

Since we were so awesome at removing those pests and helping Goomba Village, Bobby Boo's quite impressed and decides to help us find our way around in Forever Forest. Hooray! We can go to the woods now.

There are a couple of star pieces here in the village. There's one hidden behind a tree in the garden where we fought the Piranha Plants, and Gooma will give us one as a reward for protecting Goombario. Being a hero really does pay off sometimes.

Oh wait! Someone DOES have useful info! Apparently there is a Boo at Goomba Village, which is on the other end of Goomba Road. Looks like we've got a lead!

We can go to Forever Forest now, but in all honesty it's a bit of a difficulty jump. Pleasant Path is completely explorable since Luigi joined us, so we're going there now. There isn't anything important here (yet) but we can find a couple more star pieces and badges here. It's also a pretty good place to level grind, though the enemies aren't any harder or give better EXP than the enemies on Goomba Road.

New area, new enemies! We get to see Koopa Troopas now, though they're not really any more difficult to fight than goombas. They're resistant to hammer attacks so Gary'll have a tough time defeating these. Jump attacks work just fine though.

Predictably enough they have a shell attack that hurts almost as much as getting hit with a spiked goomba headbonk. They also have the ability to pop into their shells, which raises their defense at the expense of some of their offensive power. Gary can only do about 6 damage or so with his hammer when they do this.

There's a pipe here that Luigi can jump us up to in about the halfway point. Going into it gets us a star piece and a new badge. It's the Dizzy Rattle badge, which is a new hammer techique that can cause dizziness to the enemy it strikes. Gary gets it, as he learned Power Smash and could use another hammer trick.

There are a lot of nice items that Luigi can help us get. To the north is a little thicket where a star piece is.

Shortly after we're waylaid by Parakoopas. Oh Joy...more flying enemies. They can either attack with their shell, or use a wind elemental attack that damages both Luigi and Gary for light damage. Luigi's the only one who can successfully damage them here.

We've made it to Koopa Village, which is populated by what you would expect. This area's got a Toad House where we can rest and an Item Shop where we can buy more stuff.

This nice Koopa in a purple shell will give us Koopa Leaves whenever we stop by the village. Koopa Leaves can be used by Tayce T. to make Koopa Tea, which can heal quite a bit of FP.

We can find some more houses in the eastern part of the village. We can also find a star piece hidden behind one of the trees at the easternmost area. This is also where Kolorado and Kooper live, but they've gone on some kind of achaeological thing together. You guys have probably already guessed that we'll be seeing them at some point. This Koopa here's complaining about a psycho baby koopa who has taken over the playground. For those who played Paper Mario 64, I'm sure you'll find this problem familiar...

After getting attacks a few more times by Paratroopas, we make it to the playground. No one's here, but it looks like a lot of fun if you're a little kid.

We're treated to a beligerant little theme song that belongs to a beligerant little koopa. Jr. Troopa makes the scene and demands to know what we're doing here. Hold up...he just called me Mario. Is he blind or something? Gary doesn't look anything like Mario...except for the overalls.

Despite explaining, Jr. Troopa refuses to believe that Gary isn't Mario. He does explain what he's doing here, and that he's generally up to no good. Luigi and Gary take exception to this, and a fight ensues.

We've been dragged into a mini boss fight with the little creep. He's got a charging attack that does about 14-15 damage, and he can seal himself up in his egg shell like the Koopa Troopas. He can still fight however, though his offensive abilities are dropped somewhat. It's a pretty straight forward fight and Jr. Troopa isn't that tough.

He does have a stronger attack called the "Double Jumper." It does about 22 damage or so, which could be dangerous if you haven't done some level grinding. Fortunately he's not immune to Dizzy, and Gary inflicted him with it earlier on in this fight. Attacks miss half the time when you're dizzy, for those who don't know.

We win the fight and he gets knocked out for the time being. I'm sure Gary has now made a lifelong enemy with Jr. Troopa now...so I guess it doesn't matter if Gary is Mario or not at this point. You're free to look around the playground now, and Jr. Troopa's sent packing. The village kids can use the community playground again! I was sure to help myself to the HP Plus Badge inside the playhouse.

I think I'll leave it off here for now. See you later, folks.
